Jan Masters - Transform with What If

Oh my goodness, the excitement this month has been the arrival of my new baby granddaughter, Lainey. She was born on last week, pink and perfect and beautiful, and she and my daughter are doing fine. Her daddy and big brother Max are thrilled, as we all are with this adorable new addition to our family. Besides loving grandparents, this baby and her brother are blessed with three great-grandparents too, how wonderful is that! There is just nothing like a new life to make us feel blessed, grateful and filled to the brim with Love and Joy and Hope. Remembering that everyone starts out life this way, as a tiny being of Light and Love and Possibility is awe-inspiring and miraculous!

The month has been amazing energetically, with very strong winds and cool temps for this time of year in South Florida. We're enjoying it very much and spending quite a bit of time at our 'home away from home', the Deering Estate on Biscayne Bay, a short 10 minute drive, or 30 minute bike ride, or 45 minute walk from home for us, depending on how we feel like getting there. The place is spectacular in a quiet way, and gives us the experience of Mother Nature in South Florida at her very best. It's been too windy for boating so this is our time on the water! My 92 year old dad can't wait to go back after spending a spectacular afternoon there recently.

My son is planning to come home for a visit soon and we're hoping to do some boating, introduce him and baby Lainey to each other, take some family photos while we're all in one place, and just enjoy being together. My brother visited for a weekend for my Dad's birthday and we had a blast looking through old pictures and reminiscing. Very fun times.

Our garden is still producing tomatoes, the eggplants are coming along, cilantro and rosemary are thriving, and it's ready for more planting to see what we can produce during the hot South Florida summer.

The 5 Most Important Reasons to Identify Your Niche

First of all let me say, I got tired of using the word 'tribe'. There's nothing wrong with it, just wasn't hitting me right. I like niche. Probably because I'm such a language geek and linguist at heart, speaking a few languages other than English. When you pronounce it properly, 'neesh' it sounds lovely, like most French words, which it is. When you say 'nitch', ummm, not so much. And the word 'niche' in French means 'nest or alcove'. Sort of a cozy place that contains. Nice. Here are some web dictionary definitions of the word 'niche' as it's used in English. All three definitions are meaningful but I love the third one and think it applies beautifully to entrepreneurs. See what you think.

'Niche' means something really important to a heart-based entrepreneur or small business owner. It refers to the group of people, the demographic if you will, who have a very, very specific problem you can solve. Pretty cool, right? I mean if someone has a problem and you know how to solve that problem and they find out that you know how to solve their problem, they'd probably be banging down your door to hire you for problem-solving! Don't you think?

So if you don't yet have a niche identified for your work, or you do but it needs tweaking or modifying let's have a look a those 5 reasons why it's important to do that. I'll preface this by saying that before I clarified my own coaching niche, my business was NOT in a good place (after decades of success in my previous niche) and my work is GREAT! So it's not about how good your work is, it's about who knows for sure that they want to do that work with you...'nuf said.

Your heart and soul are longing for it, which you won't recognize until you find it, and either you or someone else needs to name it and claim it.
The people who resonate and vibrate with your unique gifts and services are also longing for it--they just don't know it's you they're longing to work with.
The work of your niche is so easy and natural for you that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is what you were born to do.
Your true niche is the only one that will allow energy to flow strongly, consistently and abundantly with respect to clients, money, success and joy.
You don't want to die with your music still in you.

I hope you get where I'm coming from with this. Your niche is about Joy. It's about money. (Yes, they do go together!) It's about the difference you are meant to make. It's about what the world needs from you and you from it. It's about the perfect use of you and your gifts. It's about the deep energetic, loving connection between you and the ones you help. It's about why you came here. Those reasons are not overly dramatic, they're just true.

Helping clients tease out the elements of their niche is one of the aspects of my work I love, love, love. Maybe it's the Scorpio in me that enjoys playing detective. Maybe it's the twenty-five years as a psychotherapist, shining the light and asking the right questions to help people get to their core truth. And maybe I just love feeling the 'zing' of excitement when a client realizes that we've just hit the mother lode as she resonates perfectly with the niche we've identified for her, is nodding vigorously up and down and smiling, and knows in her bones that it's right on the money!! By the way, pun intended, because we're not in business as a hobby, are we now?

Last week I coached a brilliant spiritual teacher around her niche. We had to keep leaving vague, jargony, "woo-woo" language behind and she understood more and more why, as we moved along in the process. She kept getting more and more excited as we defined the specifics of her niche: boomer women, in a major life transition, insistent to know what's next for them, need to learn how to listen to their own inner spiritual guidance, so they can go out and create it. And, oh yeah, they've got the resources to pay her.

So if you are not clear about your niche, take the time, get some help, pay attention, because your business cannot grow and thrive without the clarity and intentionality that a well-defined niche, or even, as one niche expert says a 'micro-niche' provides you as a business owner. Don't be afraid to really narrow it down and invite them to come....
